Van Gogh's Forest Paintings at Amsterdam Museum

exhibition · 2026-05-05

The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam presents 'Van Gogh, Rousseau, Corot: In the Forest', an exhibition exploring Vincent van Gogh's forest paintings and their debt to the Barbizon School. Until the 1830s, artists painted in studios, but mid-19th-century French landscape painters of the Barbizon School, working en plein air near Fontainebleau forest, revolutionized the practice. This influenced Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and especially van Gogh, who found peace in the French countryside. The show features 13 works by van Gogh: 10 from the museum's collection and three exceptional loans. Among these is 'Sunset at Montmajour', the most recent attribution to van Gogh (2013), 'Pollard Birch' from the Van Lanschot Collection, and 'Windswept Trees near Loosduinen' from a private collection, exhibited publicly for the first time since 1904, where van Gogh's fingerprints are visible to the naked eye. The exhibition runs from July 7 to September 10 at the Van Gogh Museum, Museumplein 6, Amsterdam.
