Van Gogh's favorite Whistler painting to be shown at Tate Britain
The exhibition 'James McNeill Whistler' at Tate Britain is set to commence on May 21 and will continue until September 27. It will showcase Whistler's renowned work, 'Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1' (Portrait of the Painter's Mother), which Vincent van Gogh praised in a letter dated December 1889. Created in 1871, this painting features Whistler's mother, Anna, and is on loan from the Musée d'Orsay for both exhibitions. Following its display in London, it will be exhibited at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam from October 16 to January 10, 2027. Van Gogh likely encountered the painting during its 1874 showing while employed at Goupil's gallery and painted his own mother, Anna, in October 1888. Whistler's nocturnes may have influenced van Gogh's 'Starry Night over the Rhône.'
