Van Gogh Museum to Stage Hockney-Van Gogh Exhibition
The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam will host a major exhibition exploring Vincent van Gogh's influence on David Hockney. Titled 'Hockney – Van Gogh: The Joy of Nature', the show runs from March 1 to May 26, 2019, featuring around 120 works. Hockney, born in Bradford in 1937, began using an iPad to create art in recent years, including a stained-glass window for Westminster Abbey honoring the Queen. His focus on nature dates to the 1990s after returning from Los Angeles to Yorkshire, where he painted the moving countryside with clear links to van Gogh's landscapes. The exhibition includes Hockney's 'The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate, East Yorkshire' (2011) from the Centre Pompidou collection, intimate sketchbooks, and large-format iPad drawings. Van Gogh's works such as 'The Harvest' (1888), 'Field with Irises near Arles' (1888), and 'The Garden of Saint Paul's Hospital (Leaf-Fall)' (1889) are shown alongside. Van Gogh Museum director Axel Rüger stated this is the first exhibition to explore van Gogh's influence on Hockney.
