Van Gogh Museum mounts first show on Gauguin and Laval in Martinique

exhibition · 2026-05-04

The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam presents 'Gauguin & Laval in Martinique' from October 5, 2018 to January 13, 2019. This is the first exhibition dedicated to the four months Paul Gauguin and Charles Laval spent on the Caribbean island of Martinique in 1887. The two artists sought inspiration away from Paris, which they considered too modern and dissolute. Their warm, vibrant works from this period had a major impact on their later development, especially Gauguin's post-impressionism. The show brings together a significant number of these works, along with preliminary drawings and large pastels, for the first time.
