Van Gogh blockbuster exhibition at National Gallery comes to cinema

exhibition · 2026-04-26

The National Gallery in London's record-breaking exhibition 'Van Gogh. Poeti e amanti' has been adapted into a documentary film directed by David Bickerstaff and produced by Phil Grabsky for Exhibition on Screen. The film, titled 'Van Gogh. Poeti e amanti', will be released in Italian cinemas on March 4-5, 2025, as part of Nexo Studios' 'La Grande Arte al Cinema' program. It features high-definition close-ups of Van Gogh's brushwork and alternates between the artworks and a biographical narrative covering the artist's two years in southern France (Arles and Saint-Rémy), exploring his health reasons for the stay and his passions for poetry and nature. Expert commentary and anecdotes about Van Gogh's style and career accompany the visuals. Key paintings shown include 'Starry Night over the Rhône' (1888), 'The Yellow House' (1888), 'Sunflowers' (1888), and 'Van Gogh's Chair' (1889), all created during his French period. The film follows 'Pellizza pittore da Volpedo' (screening February 4-5, 2025) and precedes 'L'alba dell'Impressionismo. Parigi 1874' (April) and 'Andy Warhol. American Dream' (May). The exhibition was organized for the National Gallery's bicentenary.
