Valerio Berruti's hand-drawn animated film 'La giostra di Nina' premieres at MAXXI Rome

exhibition · 2026-05-04

Italian artist Valerio Berruti (b. 1977) has created 'La giostra di Nina', an animated short film composed of approximately three thousand hand-drawn images sequenced into video frames. Produced by Sky Arte with a soundtrack by Ludovico Einaudi, the film had its world premiere at MAXXI in Rome during the Festa del Cinema. It will be permanently visible in the museum's Videogallery. In the atrium, a monumental carousel sculpture of the same name, 7 meters in diameter and inspired by traditional merry-go-rounds, is installed until October 27. Berruti personally shaped the carousel, inviting children and adults to ride it, describing it as a 'performance generator' that changes with each ride. Unlike his previous looped videos, this short has a proper screenplay adapted from a story by Filippo Bessone. The protagonists are Nina, a young carousel operator forced to work by her stern grandfather, and Geppo, a childlike giant who disrupts the village carousel's customers.
