Valeria Napoleone launches dual initiatives supporting women artists in UK and US public collections
Valeria Napoleone, an art collector and advocate, has introduced two simultaneous projects aimed at promoting women artists through acquisitions and commissions. In the UK, the Valeria Napoleone XX Contemporary Art Society will finance annual purchases of notable works by female artists for public collections. Applications for this initiative will be accepted from the 67 Museum Members of the Contemporary Art Society starting in April 2016, with the first acquisition set to be displayed at Camden Arts Centre in January 2017 and later featured in a solo exhibition at the recipient museum. Meanwhile, in the US, the Valeria Napoleone XX SculptureCenter initiative will fund a significant commission every 12 to 18 months at the Long Island City nonprofit SculptureCenter, beginning with a piece by Anthea Hamilton, whose first solo museum show in the US will debut at SculptureCenter in September. Both initiatives, announced in June 2015, aim to enhance the visibility of women artists in institutional collections and foster new artistic production.
