Vaivém exhibition explores hammock's cultural history from indigenous origins to colonial appropriation

exhibition · 2026-04-20

From 27 November 2019 to 17 February 2020, the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil in Rio de Janeiro hosted Vaivém, an exhibition curated by Raphael Fonseca that delved into the cultural, political, and economic significance of hammocks. The showcase included Duhigó's 2019 artwork Nepũ Arquepũ, acrylics depicting Caripuna myths by Yermollay Caripoune, and Claudia Andujar's images of the Yanomami community. Johann Moritz Rugendas's 1850 oil painting illustrated colonial perspectives, while contemporary responses featured Aline Baiana's 2016 sculpture Expropriation and Denilson Baniwa's 2019 digital collage Voyeurs. Artifacts ranged from Lina Bo Bardi's 1948 chair to Disney comics, with indigenous contributions from Isael, Juninho Maxakali, and Maureen Bisilliat's photographs from the 1970s. Fonseca examined themes of cultural appropriation and indigeneity.
