Vaivém Exhibition at CCBB São Paulo Explores Brazilian Identity Through 350 Hammock Works

exhibition · 2026-04-20

The exhibition Vaivém at Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil São Paulo presents approximately 350 works by 141 artists, focusing on the hammock as a symbol of Brazilian identity. Curated by Raphael Fonseca, the show results from four years of doctoral research at UERJ from 2012 to 2016, where Fonseca gathered about 900 pieces with Amerindian technology. The collective includes indigenous artists like Arissana Pataxó, Denilson Baniwá, and Jaider Esbell alongside historical figures such as Tarsila do Amaral, Tunga, Claudia Andujar, and Ernesto Neto. Works span paintings, sculptures, installations, photographs, videos, and documents, organized into thematic and historical nuclei. The exhibition runs until July 29, 2019, with free admission daily from 9 AM to 9 PM, except Tuesdays. Fonseca cites Pero Vaz de Caminha's letter discussing Tupinambá hammocks, while Orlando Villas Boas noted their strict geometric conception. Paulo Nazareth's installation features a performance where an employee lies in a hammock eight hours daily. The show challenges artistic conventions of time, space, form, and color, proposing the body as a flow of energies.
