Vagina Museum relocates to Bethnal Green with expanded space

institutional · 2026-04-27

The Vagina Museum, founded by Florence Schechter in 2017 after she noted the existence of a penis museum in Iceland but no equivalent for female anatomy, has moved to a new location in Bethnal Green, East London. The new space, three times larger than its previous home in Camden Market, is part of the multipurpose venue ENTER. It features a permanent exhibition on gynecological anatomy, an extended version of the show "Periods: a Brief History" (originally sponsored by The Body Shop), an education center, a community gallery, a café, and a shop. The museum first opened on November 16, 2019, at Camden Market with the exhibition "Muff Busters: Vagina Myths and How to Fight Them," attracting 120,000 visitors before the first lockdown. After reopening in May 2021 with "Periods: a Brief History," it drew 30,000 visitors before its lease expired. The museum's mission is to educate, debunk myths, and combat taboos. A promotional campaign in Bethnal Green, created by creative director Nathalie Gordon, features 16 posters using words like "vulva," "vagina," and "clitoris" to normalize anatomical language. The museum is dog-friendly, a rare opportunity in the UK.
