V-ZUG repurposes washing machine drums into furniture

architecture-design · 2026-05-13

Swiss appliance manufacturer V-ZUG has launched a 'Repurpose' collection that transforms decommissioned washing machine components into domestic furniture. The stainless steel drums become the Adora Pouf and Adora Table, while temperature-resistant door glass is crafted into a Multipurpose Bowl. Decommissioned machines are disassembled by hand at the Gemeinnützige Gesellschaft Zug (GGZ), a local social institution, avoiding downcycling. Swiss specialists Spritzwerk Rotkreuz, DER SATTLER, and Buchmann & Britschgi handle sandblasting, upholstery, and woodwork respectively. All production stays within Switzerland, ensuring traceability and regional value creation. The initiative follows a hierarchy of 'R-strategies'—repair, reuse, recycle, refurbish, repurpose—and serves as a proof of concept for V-ZUG's broader circular sustainability strategy, with plans to expand to other product categories.
