V&A East Museum opens in London's East Bank cultural quarter amid UK arts challenges

The V&A East Museum opens in Stratford, London, on Saturday, marking the latest addition to the East Bank cultural quarter at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. This £135 million architect-designed outpost joins the V&A East Storehouse and Sadler's Wells East, which both opened last year. The London College of Fashion has been operating in the area since 2024, with BBC Music Studios scheduled to open in 2027. Gus Casely-Hayford, director of V&A East, described the once-neglected area as 'a place where fridges went to die' before its transformation into a creative hub. While this development represents a significant cultural investment, many parts of the UK face declining visitor numbers, job losses, and institution closures. The V&A East Storehouse was included on Time Magazine's list of The World's Greatest Places to Visit for 2026. The East Bank quarter now integrates art, design, dance, fashion, and music in what has become London's 21st-century cultural center.
