Utzon Center in Aalborg presents interactive architecture exhibition for children

exhibition · 2026-05-04

The Utzon Center in Aalborg, Denmark, is hosting the exhibition RUMTOSSET – Space Crazy until February 23, 2020. The show aims to teach children about spatial concepts like volume, depth, and height through interactive installations. Six Scandinavian architecture studios—ADEPT, Reiulf Ramstad Architects, YOKE, COBE, Studio Poesis, and JaJa Architects—were commissioned to create playful works that engage both mind and body. The Nordea-fonden provided €1.5 million (11 million Danish kroner) in 2017 to fund projects making architecture fun for 50,000 children over four years. ADEPT's slides in wooden structures reference Jørn Utzon's style. Reiulf Ramstad's Himmelhuset features a climbable vertical tower and a swing with long ropes for depth. YOKE's Konstruktor – opus 3 uses light beams and smoke to create volumes inside a hyper-technological Space Machine. COBE's Skalabyen consists of identical houses in different scales. Studio Poesis explores repetition and measurement through honeycomb forms. JaJa Architects' Rumkikkert uses mirrors to reflect, invert, and multiply spaces. The center also provides thousands of white Lego bricks for visitors to build a miniature urban landscape, honoring Utzon's philosophy of pushing boundaries.
