Utrecht show explores Dutch Caravaggisti and their European peers

exhibition · 2026-05-04

The Centraal Museum in Utrecht is showcasing 'Caravaggio and Europe', which delves into the impact of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio on painters across Europe, particularly in the Netherlands. Prior to the Reformation, Utrecht served as a center for Catholicism, inspiring artists such as Hendrick ter Brugghen, Dirck van Baburen, and Gerrit van Honthorst, who drew from Caravaggio's use of chiaroscuro and naturalism. Ter Brugghen emphasized Counter-Reformation subjects, while van Baburen concentrated on dramatic realism, and van Honthorst explored light effects. The exhibition also juxtaposes Dutch masters with European Caravaggisti like Jusepe de Ribera and Bartolomeo Manfredi. Additionally, a section dedicated to genre scenes showcases foreign artists depicting the lively atmosphere of Rome. This exhibition will be open until March 24, 2019.
