Utopai Studios: 25-Year-Old Cecilia Shen Aims to Be Hollywood's First AI Movie Mogul

Utopai Studios, a Silicon Valley-based AI movie startup co-founded by 25-year-old Cecilia Shen, has secured a partnership with NBA legend Carmelo Anthony to produce AI-generated content about his life and sports stories. Anthony's investment, estimated by Forbes at $5 million, values Utopai at $1 billion despite revenue under $50 million in 2025 and no full-length releases yet. Shen, born in China and raised in Toronto, dropped out of the University of Waterloo, worked at Royal Bank of Canada and Google X, and co-founded Cybever in 2022 with Jie Yang to generate 3D environments for games before pivoting to film. Utopai's proprietary platform PAI, released in March, earned $11 million in annual recurring revenue within 60 days by licensing to production companies. Shen aims to monopolize long-form AI content, with projects including a sci-fi series by Roland Emmerich and a historical epic by Oscar-nominated writer Nicholas Kazan. Competitors include Disney's canceled $1 billion OpenAI deal, Netflix's $600 million acquisition of Ben Affleck's InterPositive, and investments by Fox, Lionsgate, and RedBird Capital. Utopai has pre-sold distribution rights to Globo TV in Brazil and ZDF Studios in Germany, with potential revenue of $110 million. Shen emphasizes copyright-free training and collaboration with guilds to address industry fears.
