Usina de Arte Transforms Pernambuco Sugar Plantation into Contemporary Art Park

Bruna and Ricardo Pessôa de Queiroz have reimagined the historic Santa Terezinha sugar mill in Pernambuco's Zona da Mata Sul, creating Usina de Arte, a contemporary art park spanning 130 hectares. Established in 2015 on a larger 7,000-hectare property in Água Preta, the park boasts a 40-hectare garden crafted by Eduardo Gomes Gonçalves, three artificial lakes, and the planting of 10,000 trees. Facilities include a library, a Fab Lab Mata Sul, a music school, and a center for public knowledge. More than 45 site-specific artworks are showcased, featuring José Rufino's 2015 pieces and Matheus Rocha Pitta's 2022 installation. Upcoming installations include 'Fall of the Giants' by Anne and Patrick Poirier in January 2024 and 'Generator' by Marina Abramović in February 2024, benefiting a community of 6,000 residents.
