Used Digital Camera Prices Surge, Defying Conventional Wisdom

The market for pre-owned digital cameras is witnessing significant price surges, challenging the traditional notion that prices consistently decline. Insights from Minna Camera, a prominent Japanese platform for used cameras, indicate that certain models are now valued higher than their original retail prices. Notably, the entry-level Nikon D5600 APS-C DSLR, launched in 2016, experienced a remarkable price hike of over 24% in the first half of 2026, marking the highest increase of the year. Cameras released prior to 2016 saw an average price rise of 7.1%, while those introduced after 2024 only increased by 0.6%. The list of top price gainers features models like the Panasonic Lumix TZ99 (up 8.1%) and others. This trend is not limited to Japan; globally, the Sony RX10 V is priced at $2,300, $600 more than the RX10 IV's 2017 launch price, with used RX10 IV models reaching up to $3,000. Similarly, the Canon PowerShot G7X III often sells for about double its MSRP due to high demand. This situation reflects supply-and-demand dynamics, with older or less advanced cameras commanding higher prices than newer models. Photographers in search of value must adapt to a market where established norms no longer hold true.
