US State Department map mislabels every African country at AIDS conference

At the AIDS 2026 conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, a US government map of Africa inaccurately labeled every nation on the continent. This map was included in a presentation by the State Department regarding new health agreements. An analysis by Reuters revealed an artificial intelligence watermark, suggesting it was produced using OpenAI tools, which are currently under scrutiny. The State Department accepted full accountability, explaining that a team member made hurried modifications to the slide deck. Notably, the map incorrectly placed Nigeria in the Sahara Desert, relocated Mozambique to the Horn of Africa, and positioned Ivory Coast on the opposite side of the continent. The map's screenshots were initially shared in a Substack post by AIDS expert Emily Bass and gained significant traction on LinkedIn, with one post reaching around 40,000 views.
