US Soybean Growers Diversify Markets Amid Falling China Demand

The American Soybean Association reports that US soybean farmers are pivoting to new buyers and biofuel producers as Chinese imports decline. According to Scott Gerlt, the association's chief economist, only slightly more than 12 million tonnes of last year's crop are on track to reach China, which typically imports twice that amount annually, making it the top overseas buyer. To compensate, farmers are increasing sales to other foreign buyers and capitalizing on growing demand from biofuels. The association represents over 500,000 soybean farmers concentrated in the US Midwest, covering a combined 83.6 million acres (33.8 million hectares). Despite these shifts, Gerlt indicated that growers have shown little change in soybean production. The pivot reflects a strategic response to geopolitical and market uncertainties, with farmers seeking to stabilize income through diversified markets and the expanding biofuel sector.
