US Primaries and Redistricting Expose Deep Political Fault Lines

other · 2026-05-18

Divisions within American political parties are being highlighted by primary races and mid-decade redistricting. A ruling from the Supreme Court in April permits states to redraw congressional districts, which has sparked optimism among Republicans about maintaining control of the House. According to the Cook Political Report, there are 188 seats firmly held by Republicans, 184 by Democrats, and 18 that are competitive. If Democrats secure all tossups, they could lead the House 225-210; however, if Republicans win half, they would have a slight edge at 219-216. In Virginia, Governor Abigail Spanberger is under fire for not utilizing a provision to lower the retirement age of state Supreme Court justices to challenge a congressional map ruling. Meanwhile, Rep. Thomas Massie in Kentucky's 4th district is facing a $32 million primary challenge from Trump-endorsed Ed Gallrein, and in Louisiana, Sen. Bill Cassidy did not advance in the Republican primary following his vote to convict Trump.
