US Pavilion at Venice Architecture Biennale Explores Wood Frame Construction

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

The United States Pavilion at the 2021 Venice Architecture Biennale, titled 'American Framing,' will showcase the ubiquitous wood frame construction technique. Curated by architects Paul Preissner and Paul Andersen of the University of Illinois at Chicago, the exhibition runs from May 22 to November 1, 2021, in the Giardini della Biennale. A monumental installation replicating a wood frame structure will cover the pavilion's facade, serving as both entry and exhibition space. The show features photographs by Daniel Shea and Chris Strong, models by UIC students, and site-responsive furniture. The curators argue that wood framing, used in 90% of U.S. single-family homes per the National Association of Home Builders, is America's greatest contribution to construction due to its affordability, accessibility, and egalitarian nature. They emphasize its folk architecture roots and adaptability, contrasting it with European codified methods. The exhibition also addresses climate change, highlighting wood's renewability and carbon capture, while acknowledging vulnerability to extreme weather. The pavilion includes a model of Spike's doghouse from Tom & Jerry as a pop culture reference.
