US Navy Disables Panama-Flagged Ship in Gulf of Oman to Enforce Iran Ports Blockade

On Tuesday, a US Navy helicopter struck the engine room of a cargo ship flying the Panama flag in the Gulf of Oman, causing the ship to become inoperative after its crew ignored American warnings. This action is part of the US military's renewed blockade on Iranian ports, which began on July 14. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that the M/V Vela Nova is no longer headed to Iran, thus adhering to the blockade. Earlier reports from the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) noted a military incident involving a nearby container ship. This is the third vessel to be halted since the blockade was reinstated, with CENTCOM stating that 55 ships have been redirected and two boarded by Tuesday. The Gulf of Oman remains a key maritime area amid ongoing US-Iran tensions, with casualty information still unclear.
