US Appeals Court Allows Thousands of Social Media Addiction Lawsuits Against Tech Giants

A US appeals court has given the green light for multiple lawsuits to proceed against major social media companies, including Meta Platforms, Google, TikTok, and Snapchat. The 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals, based in San Francisco, rejected the firms' attempts to challenge a previous decision that required them to engage in approximately 2,400 federal lawsuits. These lawsuits, filed by various states, local governments, school districts, and individuals, allege that these companies intentionally designed addictive products for young users, worsening the mental health crisis among American youth, marked by rising depression and anxiety. The court ruled that the appeal was premature, emphasizing that most appeals occur after trials, allowing for future reviews.
