US 250th anniversary: America250 and Trump's Freedom 250 clash over federal funds

Two non-profits, America250 and Freedom 250, are competing to shape the US 250th anniversary celebrations on July 4, 2026. America250, a non-partisan commission established by Congress in 2016, organizes field trips, a time capsule, and a national volunteering initiative. Freedom 250, created by President Donald Trump in December 2025, plans an Ultimate Fighting Championship bout at the White House, a fleet of "Freedom Trucks" with AI-infused history, and a focus on faith and prayer. Congress appropriated $150 million to the Department of the Interior, but most funding is expected to be redirected to Freedom 250. Democratic lawmakers, led by Rep. Jared Huffman and Sen. Adam Schiff, have criticized Freedom 250 for lack of transparency and potential mixing of taxpayer and private funds. Watchdog group PEER has filed FOIA requests and may take legal action. Freedom 250's initiatives include a document tour on a "Freedom Plane," a "National Jubilee of Prayer" on the National Mall, and a proposed 250-foot Triumphal Arch near Arlington Cemetery. America250 continues its own programs, including America's Field Trip for 125 students and a time capsule to be opened in 2276.
