Uruguay's first contemporary art museum MACA opens January 2022
Uruguay's first contemporary art museum, the Museum of Contemporary American Art (MACA), is set to open its doors on January 8, 2022, within a 40-hectare park close to Punta del Este. The museum, designed by Carlos Ott, features five exhibition halls, a terrace, a library, a café, a theater, and an auditorium. Construction commenced in 2019 and was completed in December 2021. An initiative of Fundación Pablo Atchugarry, MACA will display works by Pablo Atchugarry alongside loans from Latin American and European artists, including Richard Anuszkiewicz and Louise Nevelson. The inaugural exhibition will highlight the works of Christo and Jeanne-Claude. Atchugarry, a renowned sculptor born in 1954, is celebrated for his marble creations and won the Premio Michelangelo in 2002.
