Urs Fischer's 'False Friends' at MAH Geneva with Joannou Collection

exhibition · 2026-05-05

The Musée d'Art et d'Histoire (MAH) in Geneva presents 'Urs Fischer. False Friends', an exhibition curated by Massimiliano Gioni that runs until July 17, 2016. The show features 20 monumental works by Swiss neo-Dada artist Urs Fischer (born 1973, Zurich; lives in New York) alongside sculptures and paintings by Pawel Althamer, Maurizio Cattelan, Jeff Koons, Paul McCarthy, Cindy Sherman, Kiki Smith, Robert Gober, Martin Kippenberger, and Fischli and Weiss. The title 'False Friends' refers to linguistic misunderstandings between languages, as noted by Gioni. For the first time in Geneva, a selection from the Dakis Joannou collection, in collaboration with Art For The World, is integrated into the exhibition. The display includes works such as Gober's 'Dolhouse' (1978) and Fischer's 'Untitled (Bred House)' (2004-06), creating a dialogue between the artists. The exhibition opens with Fischer's 'Strontium' (2015), a large vertical eye at the entrance. Other works include 'Mackintosh staccato' (2006), 'Spinoza Rhapsody' (2006), 'Cioran Handrail' (2006), 'Skinny Afternoon' (2003), 'Large Vase of Flowers' (1991), 'Burgeois Bust' (1991), 'What if the telephone rings' (2003), and Gober's 'Corner Bed' (1986-87). The MAH complex includes the Musée d'art et d'histoire, the Rath, the Maison Tavel, and the Cabinet d'arts graphiques. Director Jean-Yves Marin emphasizes that art must continue to provoke the chains of knowledge preserved by the institution.
