Urne.rip: Artist-Designed Cremation Urns Launch at Alcova During Milan Design Week

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Urne.rip, a company founded by former gallerist Vittorio Dapelo and curator Laura Garbarino, launches its first series of artist-designed cremation urns as limited-edition artworks. The project debuted at Alcova during Fuorisalone from June 5 to 12, 2022, in Milan. The urns are created by artists Stefania Carlotti, Haris Epaminonda, Ducati Monroe (Diego Perrone and Andrea Sala), Bojan Sarçevic, and Bill Woodrow, displayed on concrete shelves by Luca Cipelletti, produced by Galleria Giustini/Stagetti. The initiative aims to integrate death into daily life through aesthetic and conceptual design, treating urns as collectible design objects. Dapelo's inspiration came from conversations with Ettore Spalletti in the 1980s-90s and earlier onyx urns called "Portacipria." The company plans to produce both multiples and unique pieces, collaborating with high-level workshops like Joseph Dalle Nogare for marble and architecture studios. Dapelo commissioned a personal urn from Diego Marcon with Lorenzo Cianchi, a white ceramic piece inspired by TheView pavilion. The project seeks to normalize death and provide symbolic comfort, as Dapelo states: "Putting an urn in the house is exorcising part of our anxieties."
