Uovo Kids 2016: Children Lead a Creative Tour of Milan's Science Museum Festival
The 2016 edition of Uovo Kids, Italy's top festival for children's creative activities, took place in late October at Milan's Museo della Scienza e della Tecnologia. The festival, widely regarded as an excellence in its field, occupied all spaces of the museum. This year's report was guided by three children aged nearly two, four and a half, and almost eight. Two-year-old Tito participated in 'Soup Opera' by Paola Buzzini, an edible art lab where colors derived from beetroot, strawberry, cocoa, pumpkin, blackberry, and green tea were used to paint focaccia pieces before tasting. Four-year-old Marta joined Shawn James Seymour of Lullatone for 'Handmade Music,' creating real musical instruments from recycled everyday objects like paper, straws, coins, tape, a cup, and a broken balloon, then playing them together. Bianca, the eldest, chose a workshop with the Bologna-based group Canicola, focusing on illustration and narrative graphics. She drew phosphorescent fish, octopuses, and an imaginary submarine on blue paper, then created a story about the submarine Tito escaping a giant octopus. The family reunited for a 'Kids Synth Lab' with electronic composer Gadi Sassoon, where children used a tablet to make a robot sing, a phone to repeat words musically, and a black square with dials to control rhythm and volume. The festival was organized by Marco Enrico Giacomelli, with thanks to Matteo Torterolo for professionalism.
