University of Milan-Bicocca launches 6-step green transformation
The University of Milan-Bicocca has initiated a structural green project titled '6 passi nel verde' (6 steps into green), which will transform the campus and positively impact the surrounding neighborhood. Two of the six actions began last week: depaving of the university squares and the inauguration of a nursery within the campus. The Vivaio Bicocca project restores over 8,000 square meters of green space to the city, an area previously occupied by an abandoned nursery. The space will become a year-round accessible green area, featuring a city forest with various tree species including ornamental plants and large oaks typical of the Lombardy plain, as well as spontaneous biodiversity with uncommon birds. The campus is also promoting ForestaMI, a program to develop urban forest and ecological connectivity by breaking up existing pavement to allow vegetation growth. New flowerbeds will be co-designed with students through a call. Over 100 new outdoor seating spots for studying will be created. Other steps include participatory gardens in university squares, gardening courses, a medicinal herb garden, and pollinator studies. Green connections with other urban structures like Teatro degli Arcimboldi, HangarBicocca, and Parco Nord are planned.
