Universal Hip Hop Museum to Open in South Bronx in 2024
The Universal Hip Hop Museum (UHHM) is under construction in the South Bronx, with foundations nearly complete after a May groundbreaking ceremony featuring Grandmaster Flash, Slick Rick, Chuck D, Nas, and Fat Joe. The 4,800-square-meter museum will include a 300-seat theater, a DJ booth, and a graffiti area. It is located near 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, where hip hop was invented in 1973. Housed on the ground floor of the $349 million Bronx Point development along the Harlem River, the museum's $80 million budget comes from public and private sources. Director Rocky Bucano aims to preserve hip hop's historical artifacts and promote its positive economic and social impact. Bronx Point will also include affordable housing and a one-hectare public park. Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz stated the project provides a permanent home for the museum while addressing housing needs for low-income communities. The museum is the first dedicated to hip hop and its elements: breakdance, MCing/rapping, DJing/scratching, and graffiti. Hip hop emerged in the early 1970s as a voice for African American and minority communities facing racism and marginalization, blending West African griot traditions, reggae, soul, and funk. Pioneers include DJ Kool Herc, U-Roy, and Dr. Alimantado. The genre gained mainstream popularity in the 1990s and has since spread globally.
