Unileão Academy-School: Sports Program in Circular Cells

architecture-design · 2026-04-24

In Brazil's Juazeiro do Norte, the Unileão Academy-School enhances the Physical Education curriculum of the University Center. The facility is built on an existing plateau with an East-West orientation, utilizing strategies for thermal comfort suited to the semi-arid climate. It features five circular cells, each with a radius of 7.80 meters, designated for weight training, a reception/cafeteria, aerobic exercises, and additional support areas, arranged in a linear configuration spanning 64 meters. Three verandas serve as entrances and facilitate functional training. The façades incorporate three layers: spaced ceramic bricks for shading, internal gardens to create a microclimate, and pivoting glass frames for cross-ventilation. The roof is constructed with thermo-acoustic panels, and materials like exposed concrete, solid ceramic brick, industrial flooring, and visible installations are used. The overall design highlights clear geometry, tactile elements, interplay of light and shadow, and the presence of vegetation.
