Unileão Academy's Circular Cells and Climate Strategies in Brazil's Semi-Arid Region

architecture-design · 2026-04-24

The Unileão Academy in Juazeiro do Norte, Brazil, is a sports facility designed with circular programmatic cells and passive climate strategies to address the semi-arid climate of the Cariri region. The building sits on a pre-existing plateau, oriented east-west, with its largest facades exposed to solar radiation. Five circles, each with a 7.80-meter radius, house distinct functions: two weight-training areas, a reception and cafeteria, an aerobic zone, and support spaces. Three galleries mark the main entrance and facilitate functional training. The facade comprises three layers: spaced ceramic bricks for shading, interior gardens with local species for microclimate, and pivoting glass frames for cross ventilation. The roof uses thermo-acoustic panels, and materials include exposed concrete and natural-toned ceramic bricks, with industrial flooring and exposed installations. The design prioritizes environmental performance, constructive rationality, and spatial clarity.
