UniCredit to sell its 60,000-piece art collection to fund social impact banking
UniCredit has announced a gradual sale of its vast art collection, comprising at least 60,000 works spanning from antiquity to contemporary art, including over 4,000 photographs. The proceeds, estimated at around €50 million, will finance the bank's Social Impact Banking initiative, which provides impact financing and microcredit, and support young artists. Some works will be donated to local museums. The collection was formed from the holdings of all banks that merged into UniCredit, and parts had been publicly accessible through museum loans and temporary exhibitions. Separately, UniCredit sold its Milan Pavilion, designed by Michele De Lucchi and opened in 2015, to Coima Res in May 2018 for over €45 million; IBM has now leased the space for offices and retail, focusing on AI, blockchain, and cloud solutions. UniCredit CEO Jean Pierre Mustier emphasized the ethical approach of generating both economic returns and social welfare. The decision has sparked debate about the role of art in social impact, with some questioning whether selling art undermines its potential as a tool for community development.
