UniCredit Halts Art Collection Sale, Shifts to Public Access

institutional · 2026-04-27

UniCredit has reversed its 2019 decision to sell its art collection, opting instead to make the works publicly accessible. The bank's new CEO Andrea Orcel announced the halt of the Art4Future divestment program, which had been selling pieces to fund Social Impact Banking initiatives. The UniCredit Art Collection comprises approximately 60,000 works, including over 4,000 photographs, spanning from antiquity to contemporary art. The collection was built from mergers of various banks and has previously been exhibited through loans to museums, such as the 2013 show "La Grande Magia" at MAMbo in Bologna curated by Gianfranco Maraniello and Walter Guadagnini. Going forward, UniCredit plans a digital platform for virtual access, educational programs for youth in collaboration with UniCredit Foundation, and a traveling exhibition aligned with the foundation's goals of supporting young people and education. Italian Culture Minister Dario Franceschini praised the decision as aligning with public-private collaboration for cultural heritage. The shift positions UniCredit to potentially rival Intesa Sanpaolo's prominent role in Italian art patronage.
