Unfold Projects revives Kellogg-designed Encinitas home for artist residency

Unfold Projects has finished renovating a modernist residence from the 1970s in Encinitas, California, which was initially crafted by Shanna Kellogg with structural input from her father, Kendrick Bangs Kellogg. Acquired in 2022 by Mel Meagher, founder of Unfold Projects, the 2,500-square-foot home will function as the venue for the biannual Unfold Artist Residency. The restoration preserved key elements, such as the high arched roofs now covered in copper, while eliminating later alterations like built-in bookcases and paint layers. Artists and craftspeople from the Unfold Guild produced 21 artworks and furniture pieces using copper scraps and reclaimed redwood. Deconstructed materials were given to Habitat for Humanity. Briana Ellis of Ritual Architecture and Megan Heacock White of House of Heacock modernized the interiors with teak, clay, and limestone. The primary bathroom now includes a living wall, aligning with Kellogg's original vision. The former woodshop, now the Artist Flat, will accommodate artists, designers, writers, chefs, researchers, ecologists, and craftspeople to investigate circularity and regenerative practices.
