cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

The ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine threatens seven UNESCO World Heritage sites, including six cultural and one natural site. Among them are Kyiv's Saint Sophia Cathedral and the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, both under threat from bombings; the historic center of Lviv; the Struve Geodetic Arc spanning ten countries; the ancient Carpathian beech forests; the Residence of Bukovinian and Dalmatian Metropolitans in Chernivtsi; wooden churches in the Carpathian region; and the ancient city of Tauric Chersonesus. Ukraine also has three intangible cultural heritage elements: Petrykivka painting, Cossack songs, and traditional Kosiv ceramics.
