UNESCO Adds Aalto Works, Rock-Cut Mosques, and Modernist Cities to 2026 World Heritage List
At its 48th session held in Busan, South Korea, from July 19 to July 29, 2026, UNESCO added 25 new locations to the World Heritage List, comprising 19 cultural, five natural, and one mixed site (Mount Olympus). Among the highlighted architectural entries are the Aalto Works (Finland), Tashkent Modernist Architecture (Uzbekistan), Gdynia Modernist City Centre (Poland), Jingdezhen Handicraft Porcelain Industry Sites (China), Italian-style Condominio Theatres (Italy), Amazonia Theaters (Brazil), Royal Capetian Fortresses of Languedoc (France), Rock Mosques and Sacred Sites of Mangystau (Kazakhstan), the Beaches of the D-Day Landings (Normandy, France), Roças of São Tomé and Príncipe, the Village of Sidi Bou Saïd (Tunisia), and the Mount Amel Castles (Lebanon), which was inscribed through an emergency procedure.
