Une Histoire Mondiale des Femmes Photographes: A Feminist Reckoning with Photography History

publication · 2026-04-27

French publisher Textuel, founded by Marianne Thiery in 1995, has released "Une Histoire mondiale des femmes photographes," a comprehensive volume that rewrites the history of photography from a female perspective. The book, directed by Marie Robert and Luce Lebart, features 300 women photographers from around the world, from pioneers to contemporaries, with 450 images across 504 pages. It aims to be non-Eurocentric, highlighting figures like Elizabeth Pulman (New Zealand's first professional photographer), Marie-Lydie Bonfils (Beirut), and Karimeh Abbud (Palestine). The project was conceived during lockdown and took significant financial risk for the small press. The cover features Indian artist Pushpamala N. holding a gun, a feminist retort to Godard's famous quote. The volume includes Italian photographers like the Countess of Castiglione, Tina Modotti, Wanda Wulz, Lisetta Carmi, and Letizia Battaglia. The book is published by Textuel, now associated with Actes Sud, and costs €69.
