Underwood: Typewriter Art at Galerie 1900-2000
Galerie 1900-2000 in Paris presented "Underwood," an exhibition curated by David and Marcel Fleiss running from October 12 to November 12, 2011. The show gathered works created using a typewriter, spanning from Marcel Duchamp's modified Underwood vinyl cover (Pliant de voyage, 1917-1964) to Pierre Bismuth's Script for Royal Road Test. Conceptual artists who systematized typewriter use in the 1960s were well represented, including Ian Wilson, Art & Language, Marcel Broodthaers, and Lawrence Weiner. The exhibition also featured works by Peter Roehr, Heinz Gappmayr, Franz Erhard Walther, and Carl Andre, whose typed poems were noted for their enduring radicality. A letter by Kurt Schwitters' wife, mistakenly attributed to him, was deemed less relevant. The review by Erik Verhagen appeared in artpress.
