Uncertainty Shapes Multi-Agent Workflow Execution Paths

ai-technology · 2026-05-01

A recent study published on arXiv (2604.27586) examines the impact of uncertainty in diverse artifacts such as PDFs, spreadsheets, and slide decks on multi-agent workflows. The researchers manipulated uncertainty as a controlled factor by introducing structured disturbances into representations derived from these artifacts, while meticulously logging the execution of fixed workflows. In their analysis of 614 paired runs across 32 GAIA tasks utilizing three distinct language models, they discovered a separation: workflows can significantly diverge yet still yield accurate results, or remain similar in structure but generate incorrect outputs. This study underscores how uncertainty can influence decomposition and routing choices, alter intermediate states, and create notably different execution paths.
