Unauthorized Documentary on Larry Gagosian Announced by Barry Avrich

Canadian filmmaker Barry Avrich has confirmed production of "Shadow Man: Inside The Secret World of Larry Gagosian," an unauthorized biographical documentary about the mega-gallerist. The project reportedly caught Gagosian's team off guard. Avrich plans to build the film through exclusive interviews with former gallery employees, market insiders, and artists. This is Avrich's third foray into the art world's opaque corners, following 2017's "Blurred Lines: Inside the Art World" featuring Marina Abramović and Damien Hirst, and 2020's "Made You Look" about the Knoedler Gallery forgery scandal. The documentary aims to expose the secrecy surrounding Gagosian's 17 global locations and his rise from a Los Angeles start to a global power broker who, as The New Yorker noted, "has had so much success selling art to the masters of the universe that he became one of them."
