Un congrès de lucioles: Art Interventions Transform Les Arques Village

exhibition · 2026-04-23

The village of Les Arques in the Lot region of France hosts Un congrès de lucioles, a summer residency program from July 1 to September 9, 2006. Curated by Christian Bernard, director of the Mamco (Musée d'Art Moderne et Contemporain) in Geneva, the project invites artists Alain Bublex, Pierre-Philippe Freymond, Vincent Lamouroux, Laurent Mareschal, Denis Savary, and Alexia Turlin to create site-specific interventions throughout the village. These works blur the line between reality and fiction, transforming everyday spaces into enigmatic installations. A sign at the village entrance announces a vast "offshore international production center." On the Place des Monuments, traces of a "Monument futur" construction site appear. A bomb shelter occupies the parking lot, a greenhouse emits strange luminous activity, and the resource center resembles an iceberg. A control post is set up in the presbytery, and a meteor sits next to a never-opened hot dog stand on the town hall square. The artists' signals—such as a laboratory-kitchen workshop, an airstrip, Betaxia proliferation, protective passages, a ghost rider, a service vehicle, and a tribune—invite multiple interpretations while destabilizing familiar meanings. The project is described as a "funny lorgnette" that offers a troubling vision without revealing the underlying motive. Concurrently, Anita Molinero presents a remarkable intervention at the Musée Zadkine.
