Un autre monde: African Photography Biennale Travels to Brussels
The 6th Rencontres de Bamako, a significant biennial focused on African photography and curated by Simon Njami, is currently on its traveling exhibition at La centrale électrique – European Center of Contemporary Art in Brussels, running from December 15, 2006, to March 11, 2007. Titled 'Un autre monde,' the showcase features over thirty photographers who present varied styles and techniques to challenge simplistic perceptions of Africa. Notable contributors include Helga Kohl (born 1943, Namibia), whose series captures the haunting beauty of abandoned colonial structures in Kolmanskop, and Lien Botha (born 1961, South Africa), who juxtaposes ethereal landscapes with children's encyclopedia imagery. The exhibition boasts 350 works from artists like Nasr, Opebiyi, and Subotzky, among others. Previously, the biennial visited Barcelona, Paris, and Rio de Janeiro, aiming to empower African photographers in defining their narratives.
