Umberto Mastroianni exhibition at Museo Bernabò Brea in Lipari

exhibition · 2026-04-27

An exhibition of works by Umberto Mastroianni (1910–1998) is on view at the Museo Archeologico Bernabò Brea in Lipari, curated by Giordano Bruno Guerri. The display spans both outdoor spaces—echoing Mastroianni's inspiration from 'alture e natura'—and indoor galleries, where his sculptures dialogue with ancient artifacts such as the Filo Braccio cup (2300–1700 BCE) and vase paintings by the Painter of Lipari (300–270 BCE). Mastroianni cited Phidias, Michelangelo, and Boccioni as his masters. Lorenzo Zichichi, president of the Centro Studi Umberto Mastroianni, renewed collaboration with the museum, placing bronze and steel works in various sections, notably the former prisons where he curated the 2015 show 'Mare Motus'. That exhibition introduced contemporary art to the museum with site-specific works by artists including Gonzalo Borondo, Mimmo Paladino, and Fabrizio Plessi, funded by a European grant. Museum director Rosario Vilardo emphasized the dialogue between classical and contemporary art. During the COVID-19 lockdown, staff focused on communication and didactics without altering the innovative installations of founders Luigi Bernabò Brea and Madeleine Cavalier.
