Umberto Mariani's Pop to Pure Form Retrospective at Fondazione Mudima
Fondazione Mudima in Milan presents a retrospective of Umberto Mariani (born 1936), covering his entire career from Pop-inspired works of the late 1960s-early 1970s to later abstract pieces. The ground floor features hybrid objects and human bodies with sensual, morbid overtones, including irreverent references to Allen Jones and a work dedicated to Giuseppe Pinelli. The upper floor showcases works from the late 1970s onward, including polimateric considerations on the picture frame and abstract 'folds' in paint or lead. Two large theatrical installations mark an interesting interlude. The exhibition, titled 'Sinfonie di pieghe: la superficie introflessa,' curated by Gérard-Georges Lemaire, runs until December 10, 2016.
