Ultravioletto's Land Art Laser Connects Medieval Borgo and Quarry in Maremma

exhibition · 2026-04-27

In the Val di Cornia, near Livorno, the medieval village of Campiglia Marittima is the site of ECO, a Land Art installation by Rome-based design studio Ultravioletto. The work uses a 3 km laser beam that travels from the Monte Calvi limestone quarry to the summit of the Antica Rocca, forming a luminous sphere that changes color and intensity while mixing natural and industrial sounds. The installation aims to create an immaterial path linking the mountain and medieval walls, emphasizing connection rather than division. Ultravioletto's designers explained that the laser acts as a vector of information, scanning the physical and sonic environment to transport it into the heart of Campiglia. The work is visible from December 16, 2023 to January 7, 2024.
