Ulla von Brandenburg's Theatrical Installations at Le Plateau

exhibition · 2026-04-23

German artist Ulla von Brandenburg (born 1974 in Karlsruhe, lives and works in Paris) presented the exhibition "Name or Number" at Le Plateau – FRAC Île-de-France in Paris from March 19 to May 17, 2009. The show featured a circular painting Forest III evoking Goethe's Erlkönig, and included works like Five Folded Curtains (2008) where viewers stood on a wooden stage before red curtains. Her practice spans installation, film, performance, drawing, and quilts, often referencing German Romanticism, occultism, and historical theatrical forms. Films such as Singspiel (2009), shot at Le Corbusier's Villa Savoye, and 8 (Acht) (2007) at Château de Chamarande blend tableau vivant with cinematic techniques. Her quilt series includes Fahne (2008), a flag paraded in London. Recent drawings titled Spectres (2008) use watercolor on silk paper from flea market photographs, then washed to fade faces. Von Brandenburg was selected for the reopening of the Kunstsammlung Düsseldorf in 2010, and her solo show at Galerie Art: Concept in Paris runs from October 30 to December 20, 2010. She previously exhibited at IMMA Dublin, CCA Wattis Institute San Francisco, Kunstverein Düsseldorf, and Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in 2008, and at Chisenhale Gallery and Pilar Corrias Gallery London in 2009.
