Ukrainian cultural heritage evacuation initiatives gain urgency after museum destruction

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

Asortymentna kimnata, a nonprofit art organization, is seeking international partnerships to evacuate artworks, archives, books, design objects, and applied arts from across Ukraine to a secure storage space in Ivano-Frankivsk. The effort has become more urgent following the destruction of the Ivankiv Local History Museum in the Kyiv region, which housed 25 works by naïf artist Mariia Pryimachenko (died 1987), and the bombing of the Kharkiv Government Palace. Separately, the European Cultural Foundation has launched European Culture of Solidarity Now, collecting donations and ideas to support Ukraine. Cultural Workers from Berlin has issued an open letter against the war, stating: "We, cultural workers from Berlin and elsewhere, raise our voices to affirm that we stand strong and unwavering with Ukraine. We protest against the ongoing and growing Russian aggression led by Putin against the people living in Ukraine." The letter is open for signatures.
