Ukrainian Artists' War-Themed Exhibition Opens in Medieval Italian Convent
A group exhibition featuring five Ukrainian artists—Yehor Antsyhin, Lucy Ivanova, Petro Ryaska, Andriy Sahaydakovskyy, and Olena Turyanska—has opened at the medieval Convento di San Francesco in Fontecchio, Italy. The works, commissioned by MAXXI L'Aquila, were created during a residency program that began in September 2022, organized by MAXXI in collaboration with Fondazione Imago Mundi and the Comune di Fontecchio, with support from the Italian Ministry of Culture. The residency aimed to foster dialogue between the artists and the local community, drawing parallels between the destruction caused by the war in Ukraine and the 2009 earthquake that devastated L'Aquila and surrounding areas. The exhibition is open to the public on March 5, 11, and 12, 2023. One artist noted a strong sense of similarity between Italians and Ukrainians in their mutual support and hard work to restore what has been destroyed.
