Ukraine's Defiant Biennale Show: 'This is Ukraine: Defending Freedom'
During the 59th Venice Biennale, Ukraine showcases 'This is Ukraine: Defending Freedom' at the Scuola Grande della Misericordia. This exhibition is organized by the Victor Pinchuk Foundation and PinchukArtCentre, in collaboration with the Ukrainian President's Office and the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy. Curated by Bjorn Geldhof, it highlights the works of Ukrainian artists from conflict zones, such as Nikita Kadan, Lesia Khomenko, and Yevgenia Belorusets. Contributions also come from international figures like Damien Hirst, Marina Abramović, and Takashi Murakami. A 40-meter banner titled 'Valeriia' by JR is on display. Four artworks, including Tetyana Yablonska's 'Youth' (1969), arrived just prior to the opening. President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed attendees via video, calling for support for Ukraine's freedom.
